The Ascot Racecourse is a very prestigious racecourse in England and situated in the town of Ascot, Berkshire, usually hosting the thoroughbred horse races.
Hosting about nine of the UK’s annual Group 1 races, the Ascot Racecourse is considered one of the most prominent racecourses in the UK. This racecourse is traditionally associated with the Royal Family of Britain. It is located some 6 miles from the Windsor Castle and the Crown Estate UK enjoys the ownership rights.
Nowadays, the Ascot Racecourse is staging 25 days of racing yearly which comprises the 16 flat meetings which are normally conducted in the months of May and October. The Royal Meeting, which is conducted in June, remained the main draw and the highlight as the Ascot Gold Cup. Out of all the races at Ascot Racecourse, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes are the extremely prestigious and racing events which normally conducted in the month of July.
The historic Ascot Racecourse has been founded in early eighteenth century by Queen Anne. The race known as the “Her Majesty’s Plate” was the first race which was held on 11th August 1711. In this race 7 horses were competed and each was carrying the stones weighing 76 Kgs. This very first race was comprising three individual four-mile heats.
The Britain Parliament passed a law in the year 1813 that ensured that the Ascot grounds will be serving as a public racecourse. Exactly after a century’s time in the year 1913 the Britain Parliament passed another law establishing the Ascot Authority, the entity responsible to manage the racecourse. Since its inception until 1945, there was only one race that took place at Ascot and that was the Royal Meeting. Since then, additional fixtures are being laid down in the grounds which include the hurdles and Steeplechase which was completed in the mid 1960s.
During 2004 to 2006 the Ascot Racecourse gone through a massive development and improvements program that was funded by the Allied Irish Bank. Upon completion of developments works, Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth, reopened the racecourse.
In order to further improve the overall infrastructure, another development program costing GBP: 10 million was introduced with a view to enhance the visibility from the lower stages of the grandstand while utilizing the state of the art Sandwich Plate System (SPS) so as to re-arrange the current concrete terrace areas.
